Twenty-six miles northeast of Dallas, about 10 minutes from Garland, is the popular city of Sachse. In 1845, Prussian immigrant William Sachse arrived in Texas and acquired 5,600 acres in Collin County. On that land, William built one of the county’s first cotton mills and gins, which originally ran on ox and horse power. In 1869, the gin was destroyed by a devastating fire. When operations were back up and running, the animals were replaced by steam power. Towards the end of the century, the railroad honored William with a depot after he donated 100 feet of his land. Unfortunately, the railroad misspelled his name and for a period of time the town was named “Saxie”. Eventually, the mistake was corrected and the town of “Sachse” was born. By the late 1920s, the town’s cotton industry was converted into onions due to demand and competing prices.
In the mid 1950s, Sachse became incorporated, making it the 25th city to do so in Dallas County. Throughout the next several decades, the city would grow in popularity. Today, there are close to 24,000 people that call the city home and the population continues to grow with each coming year.
One of the perks of living in Sachse is its close proximity to Garland’s Firewheel Town Center. The Town Center is an open-air, Main Street-style shopping mall that stretches about 1,000,000 square feet, featuring more than 125 retail and specialty stores, restaurants, and entertainment destinations. The city holds many annual festivals and events, including an Independence Day Parade and Celebration, a community-wide Easter Egg Hunt, and a Movie In The Amphitheater in May. A city favorite is the Fall Fest, featuring over 100 arts & crafts vendors, food, games, and live music. In addition to all of that, the city is only fifteen minutes away from fun in the sun at the popular Lake Ray Hubbard.
There are more than 30 beautiful neighborhoods and communities within the city. Some of the more popular neighborhoods include Heritage Park, Woodbridge, Parkwood Ranch, and Pleasant Valley Estates.
Because the city is located in two seperate counties, it is served by two public school districts. Both districts are highly-praised for their academic achievements and distinctions. Students in Dallas County are served by the 13th largest district in the state. Garland Independent School District is made up of 72 campuses, most of which have had “Exemplary” ratings. Students living in Collin County attend Wylie Independent School District, which is known for having test scores well above state and national averages. Every year, Wylie ISD produces numerous National Merit Scholarships, as well as receiving prestigious awards and honors.
