Located just 20 minutes from downtown Dallas, between the cities of Garland and Rockwall, is the popular city of Rowlett, Texas. Ranked by Money Magazine as one of the 25 “Best Places To Live”, Rowlett began gaining popularity in the mid-1970s after the completion of Lake Ray Hubbard. With more than 30 miles of shoreline, the lake is a staple of the community. In fact, the city’s motto remains to be “On the Water. On the Move.”, which says it all! As time goes on, the community grows larger and larger, gaining more recognition every year. Today, the city is home to almost 60,000 people and only a couple of years ago (2013) was named “America’s Best Small City To Move To” by Movoto.
In the last decade, the city has received many awards and honors year to year. In 2010, it was one of six Texas cities named “Playful City USA” by KaBoom! for its parks and playgrounds. The year before, it was designated “Tree City, USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation for its dedication to conservation and environmental awareness.
Family fun and entertainment is abundant in Rowlett. The city has more than 600 acres of parkland, all of which include a combination of playgrounds, trails, fishing ponds, athletic fields, tennis courts, in-line hockey areas, and disc-golf courses. In 2015, the city began a rebuild of the popular Kids Kingdom playground that had to be taken down four years prior for safety reasons. Kids Kingdom, built with the help of resident volunteers, is designed and inspired by the children in the community. Another fun spot in the city is Wet Zone, a family waterpark complete with water slides, a lap pool, a kiddie playground, and a sand volleyball court. Of course, the most happening place in the city is Lake Ray Hubbard, where residents enjoy boating, skiing, swimming, fishing, or simply just floating around with friends and neighbors.
Neighborhoods in Rowlett are master-planned, well-maintained, and community-conscious. Many of the neighborhoods are known to hold block parties and community outings. Some of the more popular neighborhoods in the city include Liberty Grove, Dalrock, Lakeview Meadows, and Waterview, home of the 15 acre Waterview Golf Club.
Rowlett is served by two public school districts, both of which are recognized by the Texas Education Agency. The majority of children in the city attend Garland Independent School District, the second largest public school district in the Metroplex. At Garland ISD, parents and students have the opportunity to choose which school in the district they would like to attend. The “Choice of School” program makes GISD one of the most unique in the state of Texas. The remaining students in the city attend Rockwall Independent School District, which received an “Exemplary” rating for overall performance in 2014. Athletics in Rockwall ISD are superb, with almost all of its sports teams going to playoffs during the 2014-2015 school year.
