When a pioneer by the name of T.U. Wade discovered a rock wall while digging a well in 1854, a town was born! In 2014, it was estimated that around 42,000 people were living in Rockwall, Texas. The county seat of Rockwall County is located about 22 miles east of downtown Dallas and is home to The Harbor, a premier shopping and entertainment district right on the eastern shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. Built in July of 2003, The Harbor was developed as a means for the public to enjoy the beautiful lake. Amenities there include a retail and restaurant neighborhood, a Cinemark Movie Theater, gorgeous water fountains, a large open park, and a marina for public access to the lake.
Restaurants at The Harbor all feature outdoor patios with views of the lake. Styles of food include anything from Mexican and Cajun cuisine to top-quality steaks to pizzas and burgers. After dinner, have a scoop of ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery or Twisty Treats, or enjoy some chocolate and caramel treats at Rocky Mountain Chocolate.
Rockwall is also home to several beautiful parks, including large playgrounds, scenic trails, and fully stocked lakes and ponds. The city also offers a number of community activities and yearly events. Some of these events include the annual Rib Rub and the Halloween Extravaganza in October, the Christmas Tree Lighting at City Hall, and the SNAP Valentines Day Dance. As for community activities, residents love the organized fishing derbies, baseball and softball leagues for both kids and adults, and the Outdoor Family Campout in Harry Myers Park.
In the center of Rockwall is the city’s historic downtown district, which is one of 2,000 across the country participating in a revitalization program called the National Trust Main Street Center’s Four Point Approach. The “four points” are Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Restructuring.
The downtown district features fine shopping, dining, and other community services. Since 2008, a staple of the community has been the Saturday morning Farmers Market, with more than 30 local vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, freshly baked breads, honey – just about everything you could want.
Other downtown activities include: the Hometown Christmas Celebration; the San Jacinto Plaza Music Series, a summer event that provides live music every Friday and Saturday night from May through September; and the Night Owls – Late ‘Till 8 monthly event, in which downtown shops extend their hours every 2nd Thursday of the month, offering promotions and discounts.
Students in Rockwall are served by Rockwall Independent School District, one of the states most well-known districts. Several schools in the district have recently received Academic Distinctions by the Texas Education Agency. The city is also home to Collin College’s Higher Education Center at Rockwall.
