Just east of Dallas, about a 15 minute drive, is the exciting city of Mesquite. Incorporated in 1887, the city got its start nine years prior as a stopping point for the Texas & Pacific Railroad. At the time, the farming community used the railroad as a means to ship such raw goods as cotton, corn, hay, and sugar. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century that the population start to grow, and once it started – it boomed. Between 1950 and 1960, the city saw an increase of about 26,000 people and during the next decade, the population would almost double. In 1970, the LBJ Freeway was constructed, which would connect the city to nearby Garland. The following year, the city opened the much-anticipated Town East Mall and the rest (as they say) is history. Today, there are more than 140,000 people proudly living in Mesquite.
The 18th largest city in Texas is home to many popular destinations, but none of them are more mentionable than the ProRodeo at Mesquite Arena. Established in 1958, the famous rodeo offers hours of entertainment from bull, bareback, and saddle bronc riding to roping and barrel racing.
The Arena itself offers more than just the joys of rodeo. In fact, it is home to the Marshals Championship Arena Football. You can also catch a major concert event, gun show, or motocross event. There is always something spectacular going on at the Arena, which by the way is one of three sections of The Rows of Texas. The Rows is Mesquite’s four-mile shopping/dining/entertainment district, made up of Arena Row, Retail Row, and Restaurant Row. Retail Row is home to Town East Mall and offers shoppers more than 3 million square feet of retail stores. While Restaurant Row boasts more than 100 dining establishments featuring BBQs, steakhouses, Mexican cuisine, Asian food, and everything in between. Other popular destinations in the city include Devil’s Bowl Speedway, Butterfly Trail, Xcape Adventures, and the 18-hole Mesquite Golf Club.
There are a number of beautiful communities and neighborhoods throughout the city. Some of the more popular communities include Pasadena Gardens, Pecan Creek, Falcon’s Ridge, and Quail Hollow.
The city is served by two public school districts, both boasting top-notch schools. Mesquite Independent School District serves the majority of the city, with more than 40 campuses and 40,000 students. The remainder of the city is served by Dallas Independent School District, which remains to be the 2nd largest public school district in the state. Both districts have been recognized in one way or another for their academic achievements in recent years. If you are more interested in a private education for your children, Mesquite is home to the Dallas Christian School, one of only four in the state to receive the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education.
