With a population of more than 180,000 residents, Grand Prairie is the 15th largest city in Texas and in the top 150 largest in the country. Just minutes away from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the city is located right in the center of the Metroplex, being about 12 miles west of Dallas and 15 miles east of Fort Worth. Because of its central location, the city is a major distribution center in the area. In fact, it houses a large portion of the Great Southwest Industrial District – 80 million square feet to be exact. Several large corporations reside within the city, including the Airbus Helicopters, Inc. headquarters and a corporate office of Six Flags.
Life in Grand Prairie is nothing short of fun and exciting. With more than 5,000 acres of gorgeous parkland, the city has been awarded the National Gold Medal for Parks and Recreations.
Speaking of awards, the city’s police department was recently named the Best in Texas for its Citizens On Patrol program, successfully dropping the crime rate lower and lower every year for several consecutive years. Which makes Grand Prairie not just fun and exciting, but safe as well!
WalletHub.com has ranked Grand Prairie among some of the best cities in the country for such distinctions as starting a career (1st Place), monthly median starting salary (4th Place), number of entry-level jobs (5th Place), and housing affordability (6th Place).
Major downtown attractions in the city include the Lone Star Park, which holds the Thoroughbred Meeting every Memorial Day, the Verizon Theatre at Grand Prairie, the historic Uptown Theatre, and Traders Village, dubbed the state’s largest flea market. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the annual Prairie Lights tour, a 2-mile long holiday display featuring more than three million lights on more than 500 displays. Santa’s elves, snowmen, reindeer, and angels are a few of the displays showcased. But arguably the most impressive part of the tour is the world’s longest tunnel of lights highlighting the exciting 40-day event.

Portions of the city are served by both Arlington ISD and Dallas ISD, while a much smaller portion is served by Mansfield ISD.
