Fort Worth is a major city in Texas that covers about 350 square miles. In fact, with more than 800,000 residents, it is the 5th largest city in the entire state. As the location for numerous major companies, Fort Worth ranks high on Forbes’ list of the Best Places for Business and Careers in the country. The city is home to the famous “Stockyards”, the historic district with original “Old West” buildings, brick-lined streets, restaurants, and saloons that make it the city’s most desired attraction. When searching for a new home in the area, Fort Worth is at the top of the list for neighborhoods to live in . Although there are many such desired neighborhoods and sundivisions in the city, one of the most popular would have to be the historic community of Fairmount.
Fairmount is a 340-acre district located on the south side of Fort Worth that has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990. With more than 1,000 contributing buildings and structures, it is the largest historic district in the southern United States.
The district of Fairmount boasts one of the country’s richest collections of late 19th and early 20th century architecture, including Late Victorian-styles. As the years go by, residents are continuously working towards restoring the area to its original beauty, complete with wood windows, wood doors, columns, and chimneys. In fact, the Planning and Development committee discourages homeowners to: paint over brick that hasn’t already been painted, wrap their house with vinyl or metal siding, enclose their porches, or use vinyl windows. Because of this, visitors get a true sense of the “old days”. When you visit Fairmount, it is truly like taking a step back in time.
While on the subject of visiting, it’s worth mentioning that the primary source of funding for the Fairmount Neighborhood Association comes from their yearly Home Tours. During the Fairmount Tour of Homes, six to ten homes in the neighborhood are selected for hundreds of visitors to come and appreciate the historic architecture that the town boasts. Recently, the Tour’s profits allowed for the F.N.A. to install period-style streetlights, replace signs, and enhance the area’s landscaping.
The community of Fairmount is publicly served by the Fort Worth Independent School District. FWISD is the fifth largest school district in Texas, yet receives the highest ranking year after year. It also happens to be in the top ten Texas school districts for teacher salaries, so if you are an educator looking for work, this is the place to be! In 2010, the district baegan implementing the “Gold Seal Initiatives”, which give students and teachers the power to choose courses based on the students’ personal interests and passions.
